When someone tells you that you need to Wise Up......what does that mean?

Verbal sexual harassment is a big deal and its happening right here, on this hall, everyday. When met with the challenge of identifying a social issue on campus as the focus of a final year social marketing campaign, we didn’t choose the easy way out like the others and ask you to exercise more or recycle. Instead, we’re asking you to Wise Up!

The Wise Up Campaign was born out of the realisation that many students are victims of harassment, often times being put in uncomfortable or dangerous situations. As one student said, being followed all the way from Sci. Tech to Towers by an absolute stranger is nothing short of a horror movie. Whether it's shouting out “browning!” or asking for pics, there is a dangerous lack of etiquette in the realm of communication between the sexes.

In a recent survey taken at ELR Towers hall, 90% of female respondents think sexual harassment is severe at UWI, and 63 % of male respondents would like to learn more on the topic, because, guess what? It isn’t just girls being harassed, guys are victims too.

Wether in public, or in the privacy of a WhatsApp Chat, both sexes have faced verbal and written sexual harassment. But what is verbal or written sexual harassment anyway? Find out by following our Wise Up Campaign. Follow us on Twitter and Instagram at Wise Up JA and come with an open mind. There’s lots to learn.

Through a combination of intriguing Social Media and Hall activities, Wise UP wants to share awareness of sexual harassment throughout Towers over the next two months. Help us help you and while you're at it learn some useful tips on how to successfully flirt without crossing the line. Wise Up!
