About Us

What is Wise Up?

When you hear the phrase Wise Up, what does it mean to you? What does it indicate? Knowledge, awareness, urgency...Wise Up is a campaign tackling the issue of sexual harassment affecting students on the UWI campus, based at Elsa-Leo Rhynie (ELR) Hall.

According to survey results, 60% of females and 63% of males on ELR hall believe that sexual harassment is a matter of concern. Understanding this, the creation of a safe space, online and/or in person, where students are encouraged to engage in reframed, expanded and educated discussions on verbal and written sexual harassment could potentially change audience behaviour towards the issue. Through this expanded conversation, our campaign will focus specifically on verbal and written sexual harassment in order to speak to the needs and concerns of both male and female students residing on the ELR Hall.

Research shows that there is a general lack of knowledge and understanding of what healthy sexual interaction means. Few students are comfortable and confident in engaging with members of the opposite sex in ways that promote trust and meaningful connection. According to primary and secondary research, students are receptive to the idea of sex education on campus, however, interventions and initiatives must be dynamic, interesting, innovative and most importantly, not vilifying of any one gender.

With this in mind, we have a series of exciting, thought-provoking, engaging and informative activities planned for the residents of ELR Hall. The first step to affecting change is to start conversations, increase knowledge and increase awareness and we plan to do just that, by meeting students where they are and showing them what it means to "Wise Up" and why it's so important.
